Dr. Jim is a lifelong learner with a passion – and training – to help adult learners teach adults across cultures. He writes curriculum and conducts seminars for encouraging Christians and training-trainers in numerous countries as a Consultant in Adult Education. Jim co-authored Education In Christian Schools: A Perspective and Training Model with Anthony Fortosis for the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). He helped compile Standing Strong Through The Storm (SSTS) for Open Doors International (ODI) with his lifelong friend Paul Estabrooks. Together they wrote the SSTS Study Guide and Teacher’s Guide. Jim also gave oversight to the development of a Seminary Course for Bible Colleges in Asia entitled: TOPAD: A Theology of Persecution and Discipleship.
His publication The Art of Education: A Biblical approach to Training – Teaching – Discipling Adults, is used in East Africa to cover a wide range of education topics from a Christian worldview. Men Alive: Becoming conformed to the image of Jesus Christ is his current book. Trans World Radio broadcasts his weekly radio program Men Alive from South Africa and selected radio stations in Canada and USA.
Jim graduated from Lakeshore Teachers College (Toronto, ON) in 1963. After committing his life to Jesus Christ in 1964, he finished teaching Elementary School and pursued a ministry career at Tyndale University (formerly London College of Bible and Missions – London, Ontario). He graduated in 1968 with a BRE (Bachelor of Religious Education) degree. While training leaders for ten years in the ministry of Christian Service Brigade, he received his Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Adult Education from Northern Illinois University – DeKalb, IL, in 1976. In 1979-80 Cunningham completed a year of doctoral research in Jerusalem prior to receiving his Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Adult Education from the University of Toronto in 1981. In 1982 “Dr. Jim” joined the faculty of Trinity Western University www.twu.ca a private Christian university – in Langley, British Columbia where he taught Philosophical Foundations in Education till 2002. He has served as a consultant in Adult Education with a variety of NGO’s.
Jim’s travels, both private and teaching adults, include diverse regions such as Algeria, Armenia, Australia (2x), Azerbaijan, Bangladesh (2x), Belgium, Bhutan (3x), China (5x), Colombia, Cuba (3x), Dominican Republic, Egypt, England (3x), Ethiopia (3 months +4x), France, Germany (2x), Greece (2x), Holland (4x), Hong Kong (10x), Hungary, India (3x), Indonesia (5x), Iraq (Kurdistan), Israel (1 year + 6x’s), Jordan, Kazakhstan (2x), Lebanon, Kenya (5x), Malaysia (4x), Mexico, Norway, Philippines (3x), Russia (4x), Rwanda, Singapore (3x), Scotland, Slovakia, South Africa, South Sudan (2x), Sudan, Sri Lanka (10x), Tanzania, Tajikistan, Thailand (3x) Tibet, Turkey (2x), Uganda, USA (44 States inc Alaska (3x) & Hawaii (6x), Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Zanzibar – and Canada! (10 Provinces/2 Territories).
He served as a faculty member of Wycliffe Bible Translators Canada at the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) http://canil.ca/ on the campus of TWU – teaching Training Adults Across Cultures. He is currently the Executive-Director of Go Teach Global Society – a not-for-profit society to “train trainers, teach teachers and disciple adult educators” across the globe. https://goteachglobal.com He teaches Theology of Persecution and Discipleship at selected seminaries and “Trains Trainers” for Trauma Healing Seminars (in South Sudan/Ethiopia). Jim and his wife, Rita married on Canada’s Centennial Day, July 1, 1967. They attend Willingdon Church www.willingdon.org where Jim served many years as an Elder. They have two married sons and six grandchildren. Jim and Rita make their home in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Jim’s life verse is 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 “It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. 6 He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant…under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.” (NLT).
